Chennai, Oct 18: It's not the usual kind of car. For, it does not run on petrol or diesel but on lead acid battery.
Technically speaking, it's called the 'golf car' but is used for a variety of 'off the road' purposes.
It can be used in estates, golf courses, factories, cargo carriers and in hotels, depending on the terrain and distance to be covered.
It was one of the popular exhibits at the five-day expo 'Green Energy for the millennium' held at Gandhi Mandapam here and was developed by a Chennai-based company.
It is not a commercially viable application as it requires battery charging and battery service stations. Hence, this G-car does not ply on roads.
The battery, which costs Rs 25,000 carries a three-year warranty and can be attached to a four-seater, six-seater or an eight-seater depending on the car. It runs at the rate of 20 km/hr.
The two-seater model is priced at Rs 2.08 lakh. It needs at least four to five hours of charging to resume service after the life of the battery expires.
All the machines, which have a 45 per cent indigenous production tag, carry a 30-month warranty. This machine, first produced in August 2000, is coming up for commercial sale in December 2000.
