Friendship

Anger forgotten arrests smiles alert,
Languor begotten lulls the inert!
Grandiose, innocent gab can mislead
Branding such behaviour as loquacious indeed!
Intimate chatter in public view,
Quintessentially is uncommon too,
Just how then do we communicate?
Must friends mingle and conciliate?
Restrain that wry, abrasive tongue...
Abstain from arguments needlessly sprung,
Lead and learn that social writ,
Be open, brave in thought and spirit!
Listen, dear folks - speak out free!
Respect a rival with whom you disagree...
Can we capture such a life of strength?
Manage friendship magical at arm's length?

This is a modified translation of her Tamil poem 'NalamuLLa Natpu' which appeared in ThiNNai in Fall 2002. http://www.thinnai.com/poems/pm1118026.html
