Mixing sports with pleasure

'Maa Mallupuram Chennai'

I am neither a sportsperson nor a sports reporter, yet they invited me to their get-together. As we gathered at Wilson Cherian and Shiny Wilson's house at Nungambakkam to board a special bus to the venue on the East Coast Road, I found the introvert in me pushing me back to avoid the famous Malayalee sportspersons' company. But I could not escape as each time I withdrew, somebody would spot me and place me among them and try to give me company.

As the bus moved, I got SAF gold winning kabadi champion Asharaf to share a seat with me. The cute and curious Asharaf helped me feel at home.

HSC guesthouse near Prarthana Drive-in at Vettuvankeni, with warm evening rays and cool sea breeze, was a nice place for the sportspersons to get together with their families under the banner of the Kerala Sportspersons Association (KESPA).

Most of these sportspersons, including Padmashree holders, Arjuna awardees, Olympians, Asian champions, national captains, who have enriched Indian sports as athletes, swimmers, hoopsters, footballers, cricketers, coaches, etc., etc., have been intimate friends to one another. However, they lacked a common platform to meet and work for noble causes. The approval of KESPA bylaws and formal launch of the association put an end to this want on the evening of June 29.

A striking aspect of the get-together was that there was an array of sports couples starting with swimmer Wilson Cherian and athlete Shiny Wilson and athlete couple Jossy Mathew and Saramma K, hoopsters Jayasankar Menon and Prasanna and Zachria Thomas and Jeena, footballer Ranjith and athlete Sherly, football-hockey couple Jacob Varghese and Eliamma, swimmer Sebastian Xavier and athlete Molly Chacko….

All present on the occasion was introduced formally. A Mallu scribe, who sat on a chair at the far end, was also not spared.

It was time to start the general body and the restless children had to be kept quiet for some time. The loving and knowing parents arranged a special magic show for the kids. The magician lured the children to another venue like Pied Piper.

The function would have been mundane without a few live songs. So KESPA arranged a small ganamela. Sojan, proprietor of Kumarakom Restaurant, which provided a sumptuous Kerala dinner, sweetened the occasion with his voice, too. The husband of a leading Malayalam and Tamil playback singer (who got an evening out from his patients and patient wife) also sang.

As the ganamela went on, children, who had a hearty dinner of ice cream and payasam, danced and played around. They jumped from the dais, somersaulted, crawled on the sands, hid in the sands, swung on branches…. Malayalee sportspersons who want to make their children also good sportspersons can be happy and confident that their children will realise their dream one day.
