If Malayalees still remember Geetha's words like "Jaadhi Purushan, Madham Manushan…" in 'Panchagni', the credit goes to Anandavalli who dubbed for the Telugu actress in all her Malayalam films. "Geetha always insisted that I should dub for her," Anandavalli says. Like Geetha, Poornima Jayaram is also indebted to Anandavalli. Anandavalli had dubbed for Poornima ever since the actress's debut film 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal' till she stopped acting. Film directors always held that Anandavalli's voice was an integral part of the roles Poornima played. "I got a good name as a dubbing artiste with Pachikka's (Fazil's) 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal'. Since then I have worked in all Pachikka's Malayalam films." Anandavalli is an expert in presenting the sentiments or varied moods of roles done by actresses like Geetha, Poornima, Suhasini, Sumalatha and others. At the same time, her voice was at the coquettish best when she dubbed for Silk Smitha. (She follows the same style for Mumtaz now.) Anandavalli has proved her range by imitating the voice of aged persons in films like 'Kanmadham' and 'Karunam'. In 'Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans,' she dubbed for five characters, that too, in five "entirely different modulations". Anandavalli traces the root of her range as a dubbing artiste to her days in drama troupes in Kerala. Anandavalli, who used to sing and act and performed 'kathaprasangams' in her school days in Veliyam, came to the professional drama field through Kottayam Chellappan's troupe. Later, she moved to Kalidasa Kala Kendra where she got good training in acting and dialogue presentation under K T Muhammad. "K T Muhammad Sir taught me how to use my voice in different ways. The tough training has greatly helped me as a dubbing artiste," she says. After two years in Kalidasa Kala Kendra, she worked in Ponkunnam Varkey's Kerala Theatres and later in National Theatres. Then she reached KPAC. KPAC's 'Enikku Maranamilla' brought her the state award for best actress. Anandavalli entered the film world by doing a minor role in 'Enippadikal' (1972). She has acted in 50 films like 'Kadu', 'Swami Ayyappan', 'Chottanikkara Amma' and others. Her career as a dubbing artiste started with 'Devi Kanyakumari' in which she dubbed for U P Gracy (Rajashree). In her almost three decades of career as a dubbing artiste, Anandavalli dubbed for about 3,000 films. Both Kerala Film Critics and Nadigar Sangam, Chennai, have honoured her for this feat. She won the Kerala state award for best dubbing artiste in 1993 for the film 'Adhaaram' Anandavalli, who settled in Chennai with her late husband Veliyam Chandran in 1978, stays at Kodambakkam with her son Deepan and daughter Anu.
