The Adyar banyan tree

When you fell,
Your rooted holism slumped,
You took ill
In an ambience of fission
That is the order of our age.
The vandal volt
Jealous of your upright stand,
Struck you down in a flash.
Your soil
Had been rich with the nitrogen
Of fine kinship;
Man, bird and beast carolled
Under your shady auspices,
Taking no umbrage.
Overhanging era!
You had hosted prophets, priests and kings,
Whose palavers and seances
Are still the toast to our memory.
You had tripped theosophy
Into a jig of revelation.
All choice hearts will rejoice
When you heave up again, wide and strong!
Do you need
Root and branch reform? you don't!
(This tree was struck by wind and lightning)
