Mother-in-law
Her closing eve was death-teasing in zest
Of panic pant-raving obit-dictum;
The session ceased leaving only her vest
That had burnt warm for years of sumptuous sum.
The memorandum of understanding
Her heart had signed at her marriage with him,
Turned a white sheet that went always rending;
Its gold for ever lay unmined by him.
But when instinct sifted to mine a gift,
Her new phase outfaced her conjugal bane,
That soon crept disgraced into limbo's rift.
The lisper crooned thus not in a motley vein;
Mere pact with flesh ever peels the soul of love
Born covenant breaks no code, signs no vow.
