A B.A graduate from Madras Christian College and an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the Banaras Hindu University, G. Viswanathan retired as Professor of English from D.G. Vaishnav College, Chennai in 1980.
He was the recipient of the Gunn Gold Medal and the Ripon Gold Medal for English from the Madras Christian College.
He reviewed books for 'The Hindu' of Chennai for a period of five years.
He started writing poetry during the seventies. K. D. Sethna, the closest associate of Sri Aurobindo, inspired and encouraged him. 'Mother India', of which he is the editor, published some of his poems. He considers K. D. Sethna, as his 'poetic godfather'.
He published his first collection of verses 'From An Ampler Ether' in 1996. A review of it appeared in 'The Hindu' just after its publication. 'Mother India' also carried a Review in one of its issues. A London-based literary press to which he sent two copies of his verses paid flattering compliments on the quality and creativeness of his verses. Fakhruddin's 'Poets International' (Bangalore) has also published a few of his poems. G. V. has a sensitive mind, responding evenly to the beauty of a daisy and the highness of a devil's actions.
He lives in Bangalore with his family.
