Special prayers and silent processions marked the second anniversary of the
tsunami tragedy in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu December 26, 2006.
Homage was paid to thousands of people who lost their lives in the tragedy.
Fishing activity came to a standstill as fishermen refrained from venturing into the sea in memory of their kin who were swallowed by the killer waves.
In Chennai, various political parties and fishermen associations staged rallies and took out silent processions at Srinivasapuram, in Mylapore, and various parts of north
Chennai and paid homage to the victims.
At Velankanni and Keechankuppam, in Nagapattinam district, which were the worst-hit areas, special prayers and condolence meetings were held and floral tributes were
paid to the victims. In Cuddalore district, which also bore the brunt of the
tsunami, similar meetings were held.
Fishermen observed the day as 'Black Day' and tied black flags to their anchored boats.
While some NGOs dedicated several permanent shelters to the affected families today, the state government also announced that the final list of beneficiaries of the
permanent housing scheme would be announced by February next year.
