India’s Problems – 1
Begin at the top
Can India improve? That is a very big question. First we must see the macro dangers India is facing and that is increasing in size. What are they? What could be the reasonable solutions? Are politicians sincere?
Before looking into the dangers, let us talk about politicians. I do not want to tar all politicians. I feel they are a better class than the lot who stand with their drinks in their drawing rooms and denigrate politicians without ever once going to the polling booth to vote.
In my opinion, a politician is not bad since he cannot become a politician if he does not have some plans to do good to society. That matters. Politicians, irrespective of whether they are in the ruling party or the Opposition, know fully well the dangers facing the country. But they fail to take up the issues on the floor of the House or are sometimes stopped from raising such issues by the Opposition.
I think this is where the first step of reform from the President of India is necessary.
We could call them specifically the President’s Initiatives as different from the inaugural speech – drafted by the government - he gives to the joint session of Parliament. Once the President initiates these changes, being the first citizen of the country and a non-politician, every political party would join the chorus.
The Opposition will be happy to join in as it would not be conceding credit to the ruling party.
The ruling party will be happy to accept the reforms as their outcome would not be binding on them during the next election.
Let us now list the dangers staring at India and the possible solutions the President can initiate and carry out.
