Paceman Ajit Agarkar was today dropped while spin wizards Anil Kumble
and Harbhajan Singh were recalled to the squad for next week's Asia Cup cricket
tournament in Sri Lanka after both missed India's last one-day series in
Pakistan. The national selectors also opted to have an additional wicketkeeper
in Parthiv Patel in the 14-member squad announced by Cricket Board secretary S K
Nair here.
Barring Agarkar's exclusion,
there were no major surprises in the team, which retains the nucleus of the side
that tasted success in the recent series against Pakistan. While Harbhajan
returns to the one-day squad after a six-month layoff due to injury, Kumble
makes it to the side after missing action in the one-day series in Pakistan.
Missing out on berths from among the 20 probables were Rohan Gavaskar, Hemang
Badani, Ramesh Powar, Amit Bhandari and Murali Kartik.
"The selectors discussed
all the probables before finalising the squad, taking into account the views of
the team management who were represented by coach John Wright and captain Sourav
Ganguly," said Nair who also announced the India 'A' team for the twin
tours of Zimbabwe and Kenya.
