Ponting comments on Dravid promotion Scorecard
Nagpur, Oct 14: Australian captain Ricky Ponting said he was baffled by Team India's decision to send in out-of-form Rahul Dravid in the sixth ODI which the hosts lost by 18 runs. Dravid was promoted to No. 4 when the hosts were chasing an imposing total of 317 to keep alive their hopes of squaring the seven-match series. And all he could contribute was seven. "That was a bit of a surprise with there being other hitters in their team," Ponting said. However, he soon went on to explain the possible reason behind the move.

"Probably, the Indians had their own reasons, thinking to keep wickets in tact and then going for the runs at that stage," he said. Ponting also praised the innings of 107 by all-rounder Andrew Symonds and said considering everything, it was the clincher in the match. "There were quite a few turning points, but considering everything, I would say Andrew's innings was the defining one." "It was an exceptional and sensible innings and came at a time when we had lost three wickets for 100-odd after a good beginning," said the Aussie skipper who made 49 and also added 96 runs in quick time with his deputy Adam Gilchrist (51).

Ponting said the Queensland powerhouse has grown in maturity over the years and has become very consistent, compared to when he started out. "He's showing a lot of maturity now and is a lot more consistent than he was six years ago," he said. Ponting said it was a very good contest and got vital wickets in the end to swing it their way. "Today was a very good contest. It was a special day, winning the series, but we had to work really hard for it. We are happy to have done really well, got the runs, wickets and the catches," he said. Ponting said the important thing in the one-dayers was that everyone contributed for his team. "All our bowlers and batsmen did a great job. In one-day cricket, you need to have a number of guys contributing. That is what we did and had a very good series," he added. (Agencies)
