Southampton (England), Sept 13: Australia beat the United States by nine wickets in a Pool-A match of the ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament here today. Michael Kasprowicz and Jason Gillespie devastated the United States of America with some fiery bowling as world champions Australia skittled out the minnows for 65 in the one-day cricket tournament.
Kasprowicz, who is in the middle of a wonderful year, took four for 14 and Gillespie took 4 for 15 as USA were all out in just 24 overs, providing the Australians with an easy chance to overtake the New Zealanders on net run-rate to emerge as pool leaders. The Australian bowlers exposed the fragile American batting at the Rose Bowl after skipper Ricky Ponting put USA in to bat after winning the toss.
Brett Lee, opening the attack with Glenn McGrath, provided the initial breakthrough in the very first over of the day before a run out in the next over gave a further blow to the tournament first-timers, who had lost their opening match by a huge margin against New Zealand Friday. After that it was the turn of Kasprowicz and Gillespie to mop up USA as the two fast bowlers took four wickets each to hasten the end of the American innings.
