News - Hard work has been rewarded: Ponting

Mumbai, Nov 5: Triumphant Australian captain Ricky Ponting said his team's victory in the ICC Champions Trophy here today was a result of a lot of hard work by the squad members. "It was the result of hard work by all the members and I am very pleased that it has been rewarded," said Ponting after his team defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the final and win its maiden Champions Trophy crown.

Ponting said the key moment in the final was the wickets that left arm pace bowler Nathan Bracken took to send back rampaging openers Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul after their blazing start had put the Windies in front. "Chanderpaul and Gayle got off to a great start. But we have seen before how the West Indies have collapsed after losing some wickets. Bracken's wickets was to me probably the difference in the game. He got both the lefthanders and he's becoming a great one day bowler, both with the new as well as the old ball at the end," Ponting said.

Ponting said the team has tasted success in one-day tournaments in the sub-continent which was very pleasing. But the Australian captain said the triumph in no way could be taken as a pointer to the Ashes series outcome as the Test team would be a lot different. "Yes, this victory has given us lot of confidence but this has no bearing on the Ashes series that's coming up," he remarked. (Agencies)
