Colombo, August 14: The start of the opening match of the cricket tri-series between South Africa and Sri Lanka was delayed due to wet ground conditions here today. Heavy rains lashed the capital last night and continued this morning before relenting towards noon. After an inspection of the ground at 12.30 p.m., the umpires decided to delay the start, scheduled for 2.30 p.m., until the next inspection at 4 p.m.
If the match is washed out, the teams will play on the reserve day tomorrow, weather permitting. A reserve day has been kept aside for all seven matches of the series, also featuring India, including the final on August 29.
A practice session for the Indian team scheduled to be held at the Sinhalese Sports Club this morning was also called off due to inclement weather. (Agencies)
