ESPN
STAR Sports, Asia's leading broadcaster, brings to you the
much-awaited India’s away tour ‘Down Under’ from
December 4. Indians will play a four-Test series with
Australia followed by a triangular tournament involving
Zimbabwe. All this and much more is being brought to you
live and exclusive straight from the land of kangaroos.
Indians
will begin their campaign at Brisbane – the Gabba wicket
which is known for its pace and bounce – in an attempt to
break the 17-year-old jinx. Gabba has never been kind to the
touring Indians right from their first tour in the 1947-48
season. The Indians had lost the first Test of that tour by
226 runs!
And the
story wasn’t any different later either. India toured
Australia thereafter on six more occasions and played at the
Gabba in 1967-68, 1977-78 and 1991-92 seasons. In the first
two, Indians had a pretty close shave – losing out by 39
runs in 1967-68 and by a mere 16 runs in 1977-78, but went
under by 10 wickets in the last one.
The Indians
have a reputation of doing pretty well whenever they have
been written off. Will this factor enliven India’s tour
Down Under?
Of
course, Indian captain Sourav Ganguly will be looking at
Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, V V S Laxman to create a
platform that will pep up Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Ajit
Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh to
deliver something that is not easily attainable Down Under.
Sourav Ganguly’s aggression as a leader and his on-field
tactics will also prove crucial to the outcome of the tour.
Australian
Test captain Steve Waugh, on the other hand, must be only
eager
to bid farewell on a winning note. It was India who stopped
Australia's Test winning streak and spoiled Waugh’s party
by humiliating the Australians 2-1 in India a couple of
years ago. Steve Waugh may not yet get the services of Glenn
McGrath, Brett Lee and Shane Warne but Gillespie and McGill
are back and no one needs to remind cricket-lovers as to how
the Australian think-tank makes a little talent go a long
way.
So watch
out for the live and exclusive fare from ESPN and STAR
Sports!
