Security of players paramount importance: Patil
New Delhi, Dec 6: An inter-ministerial team flies to Dhaka today to help the government take a decision on the fate of Indian cricket team's tour of Bangladesh in the wake of the threat by a militant outfit of that country to kill the Indian players. The team will assess the threat perception and whether the threat is real, highly-placed sources said here yesterday.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil said security of the players was paramount importance and the governments of India and Bangladesh have to take care of this aspect. "Home and External Affairs ministeries will try to do whatever is needed to do on the security aspect," he said.
External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said the Indian security team going to Dhaka would liase with Bangladesh authorities in order to assess the situation on the ground in that country to recommend any specific steps that may require to be taken. "The ministry, in consultation with other government agencies, is making an assessment of the threat received," he said.
"We would like to welcome the assurance of Bangladesh government that no effort will be spared in providing fullest security to the visiting Indian team," Sarna said. (Agencies)
