London, July 18: A depleted England attack
received yet another jolt with senior paceman Matthew Hoggard
rendered doubtful by a back spasm for the first Test against
India starting tomorrow. Hoggard became the latest to join the
casualty list in the England squad after senior pros Andrew
Flintoff and Steve Harmison were ruled out of the series due to
injury. Hoggard was sent to hospital for a scan this
afternoon following a back spasm during his team's practice
session. His place is likely to go to James Anderson or Chris
Tremlett with young Stuart Broad set to make debut.
"Broad has
come here on the back of a five-wicket haul and a 50 during the
Lions game against India, which is great for his confidence,"
said Peter Moores the England coach.
Anderson has been bowling well for
Lancashire, picking up 5 for 98 in the recent Championship match
against Yorkshire. Hoggard's injury leaves him as the most
experienced bowler in England team. (Agencies)
