Rain stops opening day's play

Visakhapatanam, Sept 26: Board President's XI were 23 for no loss when rain abruptly ended play on the opening day of their three-day cricket match against the visiting New Zealand team here today. Virender Sehwag and Akash Chopra were batting on nine each when the day's play ended only 46 minutes after it started after lunch.

Earlier, the entire morning session was washed out due to rains caused by the low pressure area developing over the entire coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh. Umpires Jasbir Singh and S K Sharma carried inspections of the ground and the pitch from 9 a. m. before deciding to delay the start of the match.

The groundsmen made frantic efforts to make the ground playable, carrying out extensive mopping up operations. (Agencies)
