Nobody can equal Bradman: Sachin

Features

World No.1 batsman Sachin Tendulkar said after equalling Sir Donald Bradman's record of 29 Test hundreds he was happy that his name would be in the same column with Sir Don in the history books, at the same admitting that no one can match the batting legend.

"I am just happy that, in the history books, my name will be in the same column as Sir Don’s," said Tendulkar. "I am happy to have equalled Sir Donald Bradman's tally but as the world knows it, nobody can equal him."

He dedicated his record equalling unbeaten 113, his first on West Indian soil, to his departed father Ramesh Tendulkar, at the Queen's Park Oval here yesterday.

"I dedicate this hundred to my father. He would surely have enjoyed it," said Tendulkar who lost his father during the 1999 World Cup.

Tendulkar also praised Sunil Gavaskar, who heads the centurions’ list with 34 hundreds, for his contribution at this ground which helped India to two Test wins.  "Gavaskar is a great player and anyone would want to follow in his footsteps and score in a similar fashion," said Tendulkar.

"I am very happy to score a hundred here in this ground," said Tendulkar who turns 29 next Wednesday. Tendulkar said he was keyed up to get a hundred in the Caribbean as he had missed the landmark at least thrice on the last tour.

"I missed three hundreds here last time so it was on my mind and I was always looking to score a hundred in the West Indies because you grow up watching exciting cricket. So that's why I wanted to do well here," he said.

The champion batsman, who survived a few close calls early in his knock, said it was not easy batting as the West Indian bowlers were disciplined and the conditions testing.

"I thought their bowlers bowled a decent line and did a good job. It was very hot out there and later on I had started cramping a bit. But it was only a matter of time so we stuck in there."

"Cricket has never been easy and this morning we lost two quick wickets and it was important that Rahul (Dravid) and I hang around and build a good partnership. Rahul batted extremely well so I could put up a good score," said Tendulkar.

Asked to compare this century with the half-century in the first Test in Guyana, he said: "It is a different match, different wicket and you know everyday can't be the same.

"If you feel your feet are not moving well and your bat is not doing well, then you just try to hang around and wait for your time to come and that's what I tried to do."
