Injured leg-spinner Anil Kumble left for home today after he was ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against West Indies due to a broken jaw. A surgery will be performed on Kumble’s jaw Wednesday in Bangalore, Indian team manager Gautam Dasgupta said.
In a heroic gesture, Kumble resisted pain and came out to bowl unchanged for 14 overs yesterday, scalping the prized wicket of West Indian star Brian Lara in the process. Physio Andrew Leipus said Kumble had slept quite well last night and he was feeling better this morning. "Kumble slept so well that he was only woken up when his wife called him up at three in the morning,” informed
Leipus.
Kumble had his jaw broken by a lifting delivery from Mervyn Dillon on the second morning of the ongoing fourth Test to cap what has been a "disappointing tour” for the 31-year-old. He bowled in just two Test innings in more than a month, taking 2 for 145 in the drawn opening match at Georgetown and for 29 off 14 overs in the current match.
