Kumble flying back; no replacement

Features

There will be no replacement for injured leg-spinner Anil Kumble who is flying back home for treatment on his jawbone fractured when he was struck by a West Indian paceman Mervyn Dillon bouncer on the second day of the on-going fourth Test at Antigua.

Indian cricket board (BCCI) secretary Niranjan Shah said over phone from Rajkot today that with just one Test match to go and an additional spinner (Sharandeep Singh) already in the West Indies, no replacement would be sent for the leg-spinner. “I was informed by the team management today that Kumble was feeling uncomfortable after he bowled with his jaw strapped yesterday and as he needs to be operated upon to set right his fractured jawbone, we decided to recall him to prevent further damage,” Shah added.

“It is unfortunate that he will miss the five one-day series after the fifth and final Test match at Jamaica from May 18-22,” Shah said. “However, we are hopeful that he will be fit for the tour of England starting from June 18 to September 9,” Shah added.
