McMillan,
the magical hitter.
McMillan, the run maker.
McMillan, morose manufacturer for the opposition.
If you are
wondering that something is missing in this list, well, it was added
recently:
McMillan, the match winner.
Indeed, it was a
match winning and series-saving innings by Craig McMillan at Cuttack.
Excellent flicks,
glorious drives, solid defence and cheeky reverse sweeps too!
His well-compiled
82 off 92 balls was the highlight of New Zealand.
Assisting him well
was the smiling soldier, Scott Styris. His well placed 68 off 89
balls was another handsome contribution.
Seeing those two
bat at the crease, blending logic with innovation ease, I was
reminded of music.
A musician's dream would have been this: two instruments playing perfectly, competing and complementing each other to produce soul-lifting music.
And, any cricket lover would have noticed that dream of a man of
music in the McMillan-Styris partnership. Two batsmen, perfectly at
ease in milking the bowlers, placing the ball in the gaps, ah - that
was music, indeed!
Geniuses like
Ilaiyaraja and A R Rahman do not think of selling one lakh cassettes
when they produce heart-touching music. Kamal Hassan and Mani Ratnam
do not think of something as trivial as the number of people buying
tickets for their oh-so brilliant movies.
They just do what
they are good at.
In my opinion, it
was the same with McMillan and Styris. They did what came naturally
to them: batting. Winning the match was just incidental.
