Trinidadian opening batsman Daren Ganga has been recalled to the West Indies team to replace his ailing teammate Brian Lara for the tour of India next month. The West Indies Cricket Board announced the decision in a statement yesterday.
Lara was hospitalised in Sri Lanka last week after scoring a century for the West Indies against Kenya in a one-day Champions Trophy tournament match. Team officials said it was likely Lara was suffering from hepatitis, a diagnosis later confirmed by tests. Lara remained hospitalised, but officials were not releasing information about his condition.
Ganga, a 23-year-old right-hander, last played for the West Indies against Pakistan early this year when the series was played in Sharjah. Ganga, who has played 15 Tests while recording 563 runs at an average of 20.85, captained the West Indies A team that toured England and Canada during the summer.
The West Indies will play three Tests and seven limited-over internationals in India from October 4 to November 24. Carl Hooper will lead the 16-man squad, which was announced earlier this month. |
