Speedster Javagal Srinath has agreed to change his retirement decision and will play Test cricket again, skipper Sourav Ganguly announced today. “He is going to play in Tests again,” Ganguly told reporters here. “He has told Brijesh Patel (chairman of the selection committee) and he has told us also.”
Srinath, 33, who has been asked to join the team here for the final of the Champions Trophy as a replacement for injured Ashish Nehra, had announced his retirement from Test cricket in June immediately after India returned from a tour of West Indies.
Repeated requests from Ganguly to reconsider his decision had been ignored by Srinath who said he wanted to concentrate on next year’s World Cup in South Africa. However, despite making himself available for the one-dayers, he was not picked for the NatWest series in England or the Champions Trophy here.
“I have always told him we need him to play Test matches. I think he has done fantastically well in Leicestershire,” Ganguly said, describing him as a true performer for India. Ganguly said India badly needed Srinath during the Test series against England. “We were disappointed that he backed out. But all that’s in the past.
“Now that he has changed his mind, the team is happy to see him return,” he said. Srinath, who made his debut in Australia a decade ago, has taken 232 wickets in 64 Tests and 276 wickets in 204 one-day internationals. |
