Sahaayika presents 'Crossroads'
'Sahaayika', an
NGO dedicated to providing free and total support to people with
cancer, will present 'Crossroads', a fund-raising dance programme.
This is being performed by Nirmala Seshadri and Neewin Hershall at
Music Academy on September 5 at 6.45 p.m.. This event is supported by
The Duchess Club.
'Crossroads' reflects the coming together of two mature and dedicated dancers, Nirmala Seshadri and Neewin Hershall. The performance explores the nuances of this eternal journey of differences, meetings and partings through the structure and function of dance. It is a fresh interpretation of the Bharatanatyam repertoire.
Nina Reddy, executive director,
Hotel Savera said, "We are proud to be associated with Sahaayika. Creating awareness and lending a helping hand to ailing patients, is the least we can do as humans. In fact, there is much to be done to alleviate suffering and we, from the Duchess Club, assure Sahaayika thal we are committed to the cause. "
Neerja Malik, founder-member of Sahaayika said, "When we found that cancer treatment was so expensive and wondered how difficult it would be for economically backward people to undergo treatment, we felt the need to reach out to the underprivileged. "
Girija Sudheendran, founder-Member of Sahaayika said, "Sahaayika means helping through companionship. In the last one year, we have disbursed about Rs 5 lakh which have helped about 140 economically challenged cancer patients."
Sahaayika was founded by two cancer survivors, Girija Sudheendran and Neerja Malik. Both the founders were diagnosed with cancer a few years ago and overcame the side-effects of the treatment and came back with a renewed passion for life. Since then, both of them have been involved in giving emotional support to patients and their families. Sahaayika aims to reach out and touch meaningfully as many young lives as possible and half of the trust funds will be allotted to children with cancer and those who have a genuine chance of recovery. It aims to support treatment of at least 100 patients in a year.
Sahaayika has turned one. The cause of Sahaayika - Aid to face cancer -- is unique because it is the life mission of two cancer survivors, and compassion arises from personal experience combined
with a positive attitude.
K K Sudheendran, Girija's husband, who has been a part of his wife's battle with cancer, has been instrumental in setting up the trust and ensuring its smooth working. The other trustees are Hema Sheth and Sarada
Vanchi.
Sahaayika is dedicated to provideing free and total support - financial and emotional - to people with cancer, so that their loved ones can receive the hope needed to face and fight the crisis to help maintain the quality of their lives.
Funds have also been earmarked for adolescents and for young women with breast cancer. Of course, Sahaayika's funds go to the underprivileged and economically challenged cancer patients.
Sahaayika has made 140 disbursements, totalling approximately Rs 5 lakh, in the last one year. And this has been achieved by voluntary donations from friends and well- wishers.
One of the highlights of the programme is the magnificent painting gifted to Sahaayika by renowned artist Thota Tharani. The painting will be auctioned at a later date, the proceeds of which will go to the Sahaayika Trust.
