Kartik Fine Arts is conferring the title of Nadanamamani Priya on December 1.
Priya Jayaraman is a complete danseuse, according to eminent critic Subbudu. Blessed with a beautiful and striking stage personality, Priya has won plaudits from critics and connoisseurs.
Priya was introduced to dance at the tender age of five under the tutelage of her mother, Dr Saraswathy. She assimilated the basis of the famous Pandanallur style and tradition that is known for its sculpturesque pose, grace, perfection and elegance, and blossomed into an exquisite and consummate, skilled artiste. She executes with great skill an intricate rhythm and variations. Her abhinaya exhibits finesse, dexterity, depth, refinement and
versatality.
She is equally proficient in the Kuchipudi style of dance having been trained by guru M V N Murthy and has appeared on BBC television with specially choreographed Kuchipudi items composed by
Kunnakudi
Vaidyanathan. She has also performed Jugalbandhi in dance with Odissi and Kathak dancers. in both Bharathaatyam and Kuchipudi styles. She has presented exclusive programmes with compositions of M Balamuralikrishna.
Priya has been performing extensively. She has so far completed over 1,000 programmes on stage, besides nearly 50 television programmes. A graduate of commerce from Madras University, she has won several prizes in various competitions. She was awarded the 'A' grade by Doordharshan in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. She figures in the panel of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). She has been awarded
Kalaimamani by the Government of Tamil Nadu. She has toured and performed in the US and
Canada, Maldives,
Singapore and
Malaysia.
Kartik Fine Arts will confer the title of Nadanamamani (Shriram Award of Excellence) with a citation and cash prize of Rs 15,000 on Priya Jayaraman in the 30th year art festival at the Sadguru Gnananda Hall of the
Narada Gana Sabha in Chennai.
