Barefoot for a cause
Ms Corie Banks (a perky, spontaneous, romantic) weds Mr Paul Bratter (a staid, uptight, lawyer) in the funniest love story ever! That's how evam sums up its next play, coming up at the Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium on February 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13, and again on February 19 and 20 in Chennai.
About the play
Directed by Sunill evam Karthik
This February 2005, evam recreates a timeless classic by adding music, choreography and colour - creating the magic of melody, romance and humour in the Valentine's season -- evam style! evam has staged 49 shows in over five productions last year. 'Barefoot in the Park' is slated to be the biggest show by evam. A record 10 shows will be staged in Chennai over three weekends.
Adapted from the hilarious play by Neil Simon, this story combines love and laughs. Paul Bratter is a newly-married lawyer. Corie Bratter, a newly-married woman whose main goal in life is to have fun and to have it with Paul. He's working hard at starting his career as a lawyer; she's eager to be romantic and spontaneous; and the two have plenty to squabble about. Together they learn how to live and love in an apartment that's laughably small in New York and located on the fifth floor of a building with no elevator. Their highly passionate relationship descends into comical discord! A truly feel-good comedy.
'Barefoot in the Park' debuted in the Biltmore Theatre in New York, October 23, 1963, and ran till June 25, 1967, for 1,530 shows. Robert Redford portrayed straight-arrow attorney Paul on Broadway and in the 1967 movie. Elizabeth Ashley was nominated for a Best Actress Tony for her role as the spontaneous Corie, while Jane Fonda starred opposite Redford in the film. Mike Nichols won the first of his six Tonys for Best Director with 'Barefoot in the Park'. The play received four Tony nominations and the movie garnered one Oscar nomination.
Neil Simon has made a fabulous career out of plays and movies that allow us to laugh about people having to deal with people. From 'The Odd Couple' and 'The Sunshine Boys' to 'The Star-Spangled Girl' and 'Last of the Red Hot Lovers', Simon puts his characters in real-life situations in which they are not only forced to address their differences but to find strength from their common bonds.
