T K Shanmugam's 93rd birth anniversary
"It looks like a Teacher's Day for me," said noted film actor Kamal Hassan. He was participating as the chief guest at the T K Shanmugam's 93rd Birth Anniversary celebrations recently in Chennai.
The function was organised by Sankaradas Swamigal Ninaivu Manram. Kamal Hassan said he learnt the basics of Tamil language after following the footsteps of 'Avvai' Shanmugam though he had studied in an English medium school.
On the lines of the National School of Drama in New Delhi, "we must have two halls for the two eminent personalities of the film industry - one for 'Avvai' Shanmugam and the other for the ace film director K Balachander", Kamal Hassan urged.
"Though my movie is 'Mumbai Express', I will be express in taking initiatives for the development of drama," he added.
Kamal also released the book titled 'Americavil En Kalaipayanam', published by Poovazhagi Publishers, and written by T K S Kalaivanan, the secretary of the club, and also the son of T K Shanmugam. He also presented the 'Special Achievement' award to the music directors M S Viswanathan and T K Ramamurthy, while actor Prabhu received the M K Radha Award.
Earlier, the president of the club and former actor S S Rajendran unveiled the photograph of actor Sivaji Ganesan, while Kamal Hasan unveiled the photograph of the legendary Carnatic musician M S Subbulakshmi. S S Rajendran spoke about his relationship with Sivaji Ganesan. He recollected that though he came late to the sets for film shooting, Sivaji Ganesan would always be punctual.
Madura Travels proprietor V K T Balan, Prof. Rajagopalan of Tagore Arts & Science College, noted speaker Pazha Karuppiah, T K Kala, daughter of former actress T K Shanmugha Sundari, were the other dignitaries present.
