 'The Cut of Hamlet' by evam
 An evening of absolute comical madness has been promised by evam in a Double Comedy Festival on June 24, 2006 (7.15 p.m.), June 25, (2 p.m. and 7.15 p.m.), 30th June 30 (7.15 p.m.), and July 1 (2 p.m. and 7.15 p.m.), at the Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium.
This will be an evening of two comedies, equally entertaining and de-stressing. It is two hours of un-adulterated fun and rib-tickling comedy for people of all age groups; full of surprises, mindless fun and interactive theatre - a never-before experience on stage in Chennai - it is a complete stress-busting experience performed by more than 20 people on stage, says a spokesperson.
'The Cut' by Ed Monk, a farcical comedy by evam, has all the ingredients of a potboiler - makes one laugh at everything around us including ourselves, while ‘Hamlet’ is a spoof of the Shakespearean play ‘Hamlet’.
Performed by Sunil Vishnu K, Karthik Kumar and Kartik Srinivasan, the three get into different roles, characters, costumes. These weirdos have not a clue of what is happening. They are lifted right out, far, far away from where they were meant to be (maybe England??), have misplaced identities and have come to take over Chennai in a whirlpool of riotous humour!
'The Cut of Hamlet' has been put together from scratch by 25 brand new faces. This production is the culmination of a two-month-long workshop, script readings and rehearsals. These 25 were chosen from the 250 people who applied for the workshop, and made it after thorough screening and auditioning. They then underwent an intensive workshop on every single aspect of a theatre production - acting, lighting, sound design, backstage production and even touched upon theatre as a business, to give those who want to dabble in theatre a bit more seriously a feel of what it is to make it a career.
With a cast of Gokul, Naveen, Aparna, Sumithra, Dinesh, Abhinav, Vidya, Rashmi, Shankar, Uttara, Prashanth, Noshir, Joel, Abhishek, Preethi, Darshan, Shyamini, and with technical support by Srinidhi, Surekha and Vijay Saravanan (with lights), sound by Vijay Kartik and directed by evam, the evening promises topsy-turvy pandemonium, the spokesperson says.
'The Cut' by evam is a farcical comedy which takes bizarre proportions. The play is a mix 'n'' match of a total blockbuster till the actors and the audiences find they are mind boggled and humour takes its toll - it’s quite a roller coaster ride kind of experience, says the spokesperson.
The setting is real - the plot starts off as a normal story focusing on a couple who seem to be having some problems in their relationship which they are reluctant to discuss. Emotion, action, romance, comedy, tragedy - all in one play. What is truth? What is reality? And in any case does it matter? Many questions are raised but answers are rare in this laugh riot. Add to that the evam adaptation touch and style and what we have is a total entertainer - a multi-layered simple play!
‘Hamlet’ the spoof on Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, is performed by Karthik Kumar, Sunil Vishnu K and Kartik Srinivasan. With sets by Michael Muthu, the backdrop ideal for our 'period play', this is more than what these three misfits can bargain for. This all-male cast enacts Hamlet in just about an hour, playing eight characters including two women. Hamlet, Gertrude, Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes all get a brand new, whacky new look!! There is chaos and absurdness and confusion - amidst all this lies the comedy brought to you by evam.
