25 Tamil plays to be staged in Chennai
Chennai will host a major drama festival from July 22, 2005. 25 Tamil dramas from 25 troupes, including from the Sri Shanmughananda Sabha, Mumbai, will be staged in six auditoriums for 25 days from July 22.
The drama festival, organised by United Visuals (UV), would be open to the public free of cost on all the days, UV director and TV actor Vardharajen and film-cum-drama actor S Ve Shekher said in Chennai.
The dramas are being staged in various parts of Chennai not merely for regular theatre goers but also to attract newer audience, they said.
The organisers were offering the dramas free of cost, in contrast to other cities where peole were ready to pay for the tickets, with a view to encourage more people to see the plays, they added.
"The concept of the festival is to highlight that only the drama is the real hero and hence the focus is on the plays and not on individuals", Vardharajen said.
A seminar would be held on August 7. Shekher said a large number of corporates have come forward to fund the entire festival. Vardharajen said he had written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa seeking financial help. Varadharajen would be felicitated during the festival for completing 25 years in the field of theatre.
