Sammy
A word that broke an empire! Written by Partap Sharma and directed by Lillete Dubey, The Primetime Theatre Company's 21st production 'Sammy' is a result of several years of research on Mahatma Gandhi by Partap Sharma and is a well-researched and innovatively conceived piece of theatre. It will be performed in Chennai on Sunday, February 5, 2006, at the Music Academy.
Performed by an ensemble cast of well known and talented actors from the stage and screen, who play many parts, it recounts Gandhiji's story in a contemporary manner from his earliest days to his final assassination in a short span of two hours.
Sammy is a dramatic and modern version of this story with plenty of Gandhiji's hallmark humour. An extraordinary man about whom Einstein reportedly said, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one once walked upon the earth"!
Says Nalini Radhakrishnan of Media Mix, Sammy is important not just as a vibrant piece of theatre but is especially relevant because of the times we live in, where his creed of non-materialism and non-violence is sorely needed in an age of terrorism and consumerism!
The title of the play is easily explained and becomes clear in the early part of the action. The word sammy, along with the word coolie, was used as a derogatory term by the Whites in South Africa to insult Indians and other coloured people. It originates from the word swami, which actually means master or guru. When he first hears an angry mob in Durban shouting the word as an insult to describe him, the young Mohan smiles and ventures the hope that he may some day be able to live up to it.
