Dance performance at Skandasramam
Bharatanatiya dancer Apoorva Ramani will give a special performance on Vijayadasami Day, October 2, 2006, at the Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam as part of the Dasara celebrations of the temple.
A student of class-8 in Chettinad Vidyashram, Apoorva is a disciple of Sujatha Mohan. Sujatha was herself a student of Dr Padma Subrahmanyam and trained at her dance school, 'Nrithyodaya', for more than 15 years.
Sujatha's long list of achievements includes a diploma and certificate course for practical, theory and nattuvangam, and the Bharatha Nritya Sali diploma in karanas.
She started a school for dance, 'Padmashree Nrithyalaya', in 1998.
She has been conferrred the title 'Bharatha Nrithya Priya' by her guru Padma
Subrahmanyam.
In addition to her qualifications in dance, Sujatha also holds an M.Phil in Sanskrit literature.
Trained under such an illlustrious teacher, Apoorva had her arangetram on August 9, 2006, in Chennai after learning the art for the past five years.
The chief guest for the occasion was Dr Padma Subrahmanyam. Other guests of honour were Dr Meena Muthiah (Kumara Rani of Chettinad), Dr V Shantha (Magsaysay award recipient) and Padmashree Sudha
Ragunathan.
Apoorva has performed in various sabhas and temples like Parthasarathy Sabha (Mylapor Fine Arts), Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Kapaleeswarar temple.
"But it was her father K R V Ramani's wish that she should perform in front of his spiritual perceptor, Sri Santhanantha Swamigal, after her arangetram," informs P Santhanam, the manager of the Skandasramam temple where Apoorva is to give her next performance.
The Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam temple is the brainchild of Sri Santhanantha Swamigal who did not live to see its completion. He was a moving force in the life of the Ramanis who contributed to the construction of the Ayyappa shrine in the temple.
Apoorva's dance programme is open to the public.
