The prudence, sagacity and above all the almost unending patience of Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, combined with the flexibility of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the practical wisdom of Mamata Banerjee clinched the new covenant, ending the long stalemate at Singur. The gubernatorial incumbent could make the ostensibly impossible, possible. This deal without doubt will have far reaching politico-socio-economic consequences.
Singur has several lessons to teach. Neither industry nor agriculture should try to strangle each other, if society is to prosper. They have to coexist and grow hand in hand. It is to be hoped that this arrangement will usher in a new era in west Bengal and in other parts of India as well.
An ironical and incongruous situation arose in the State where the Marxist Government was seemingly trying to rout the uprising of farmers against what the latter considered the imperialistic designs of the industrialists! In retrospect, the Dharna, the threat of the Tatas that they would move out, and above all, the use of muscle power by the local parties, have all been proved pointless and futile. Finally, all is well that ends well.
In this big war for the small car, that is fortunately over, Mamata might be seen as the champion of the farming community. So what? The real winners are the people.
