By H Ramakrishnan Maruthamalai Maamaniyae!

Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan, a versatile genius was a great performer, creative composer, dedicated organizer and supporter of several young artists. Whether in the concert hall or in the innumerable recordings, the sound of his violin was instantly recognizable. His violin had a tone that was uniquely pure. He had a technique that was virtuosic and an insight that was interpretative.

Had he been born in UK, he would have either been knighted by the Queen or made the Royal musician. He carried grandeur that was unmatched.

His interests and capabilities in music ranged from the most classical to the devotional, to the light and to film songs. And in every aspect he excelled.

Some of his compositions including the ever-green Maruthamalaimaamaniye from the movie Deivam have acquired eternity.

If he had excelled as an accompanist with Ariyakkudi, Semmangudi and Maharajapuram, he stood out as a solo performer without par.

Who else could have conducted the Tiruvaiyaru Thyagaraja Aradhana with so much of dedication, in a world of musicians who would never come together, whatever the cause? He succeeded in drawing together thousands of artists for the Pushya Bakula Panchami.

In the field of innovations, he was a pioneer. Whether it was a combination of Violin and Tavil or, violin and Konnakkol, he was ever ready for experimentation.

History of Carnatic music or Tamil film music will be incomplete without at least a chapter on him. May his soul rest in peace.
