By H Ramakrishnan 'Hurricane' In US

President Bush has almost said that the US economy is in the ICU. The country could experience a long and painful recession and warned, millions could lose jobs. There is turmoil all over the 'richest' country, while the whole world is anxiously and eagerly watching to see if and how the Americans would solve the problem- the gravest after the great depression of the 20s and 30s.

Republican Presidential nominee John McCaine suspended his campaign last night. At the time of writing this column, the debate on tomorrow's Mississippi Presidential debate is still on. Will John MacCaine show up? It is a 700 billion dollar question. There is a lot of nervousness in the University campus as to what will happen at 8pm eastern tomorrow night.

Today, President Bush had a meeting with, among others, the two men vying for his seat. At the rare moment of two Presidential nominees, though seated in opposite corners of the Cabinet Room of the White House, meeting him, the President hoped for bipartisan cooperation to solve the serious economic crisis.

At the end of the contentious meeting, though the deal was not finalized, they have hashed out the fundamentals of the bail-out. The contentious issue is if the U S government should bail out the rich, greedy people. Of course, the bail out plan has sparked public fury, an outrage. Somehow the people are not prepared to believe the Paulson plan.

With forty days until Election Day and with the American Congress scheduled to go into recess tomorrow night, President Bush is in a violent hurry to get the National Rescue Plan through. The goal is not to pass the bill, but fix the problem. Situation is really grave.

The irony is that while the Democrats might agree to the proposal, President Bush's own Republican members are stalling the deal. The House Republican leader insists on an alternate plan.

In the dark clouds that the economic hurricane has created, the only silver lining is the total sense of responsibility Barack Obama has displayed. He is all for a deal that would protect the interests of the tax-payers.
