The Isle of Serendipity. Yes, that is Sri Lanka. Serendipity means happy discoveries that you make accidentally. It now stands for happiness.Does Sri Lanka these days generate happiness? In fact, it appears to hang like a tiny drop of tear under the Indian peninsula in the Indian Ocean.
For years now, there is war there. A war against nobody-knows whom? Since Tamils are involved, and mostly they are its victims, Political parties in Tamil Nadu naturally get agitated. The CPI sponsored demonstration started the present political agitation. The CPI(M), DMDK, MDMK, Tamil Desiya Iyakkam and Viduthalai Chiruththaikal participated in the day long protest.
Once it became political, the ruling DMK could hardly afford to keep silent, especially in the election year! Its Chief Karunanidhi asked Tamils to send telegrams to the Prime Minister, who spoke to the former yesterday morning. The CM told the PM that the Sri lankan High Commissioner should be summoned and condemn the genocide of Sri Lankan Tamils. He also wanted an end to the incidents of shooting at Indian fishermen..
Delhi's follow up was instant. The National Security Adviser summoned Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner and conveyed India's concerns to him.
Later, addressing a public meeting, Karunanidhi held out a veiled threat. He said that the DMK's staying on in power could be a question mark, 'if the Sri Lankan Government continues to ignore India's warning to stop the attack on Tamils.'
The Congress in Tamil Nadu didn't want to be found left alone. Its President K V Thangkabalu also appealed to Prime Minister to take immediate steps in this regard. And so did Dr Ramadoss of the PMK.
Such appeals and veiled warnings are going on for several decades now, with no result in sight. Just like what a Peer wittily said during the Impeachment of Warren Hastings, 'the judges walked and the trial stood still.'
