for deck officers. Candidates

successfully complete training at this institute will be eligible for
taking up jobs as navigating officers on board of any ship sailing in the vast oceans of the

Science under the aegis of the University of Madras and recognised by
the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India.

Admission Strength
Candidates for admission to the 3 year B.Sc, Nautical Science Degree course at
Vel's Academy of Maritime Studies, Chennai will be selected on the basis of their performance in the all India IIT Joint Entrance Examination or its equivalent conducted by the institute. The number of seats at
Vel's Academy of Maritime Studies is ninety students per year. Number of candidates admitted to the institute may vary each year.
Eligibility for admission
Candidates must have passed standard XII under the 10+2 pattern or equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as separate subjects. Minimum acceptable marks for PCM is 60 percent aggregate and 50 percent English.
Admission is open to unmarried Indian citizens including girls. Candidates from other countries may be admitted subject to their obtaining approval from the Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India and confirmed by the University of Madras.

Fitness
A Candidate must be physically fit with normal vision 6/6 without
spectacles. Defective colour vision is a disqualification.
Age
Limit
A candidate must not exceed 20 years of age on 1st
July of the year of entry. This age limit is relaxible by 5 years in
the case of candidates belonging to SC / ST. Date
of Birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University
Certificate only, will be taken as authentic.
