The twenty-first century has already dawned. The nation is poised for rapid growth on all sides. And the responsibility on the shoulders of the youth is probably weighing them down, to gear up to the requirements of the future. Even the child in the Kindergarten has to undergo all the troubles of a heavyweight champion. The number of books they carry and the number of subjects they study seems too much for their age. But perhaps, it is the demand of the age that is being ushered in.
Of all the subjects that these children learn, mathematics has been considered a dreaded subject by a good majority. Still, it holds the key. It is the core of all sciences. Technology and its advancement depend to a great extent on the proper understanding of its principles. Mathematics is an abstract science and requires a special kind of treatment. Think of it. This is the land that gave 'zero' to the world. This is the land that gave Bhaskaras, Leelavathis, Ramanujans and Sakuntalas to the world.
A week to convert the weak
The St. John's Matriculation School of Mandaveli organised a Mathematics Week, from January 8th to 12th with the idea to allay the fears about mathematics and to attract the impressionable minds towards this all encompassing science. A good start indeed!
Mr. V. Ramamuthu inaugurated the celebrations and delivered a thought provoking address. Mr. V. Ramachandran, Dr. Partho Masurthan, Dr. P. V. Subramaniam and Mr. Raghupathy were the special guests on the subsequent days.
As part of the celebrations, a Mathematics Fair is organised from January 18 to 21, at the Periyar
Ariviyal Poonga. Five schools are participating in the fair and there will be as many as 1500 three-dimensional models on the exhibit. There will be quiz programmes and seminars, related to mathematics.
The Mathematics Week joins the list of other weeks like the Library Week, Railway Week etc. It is our sincere wish that this week would benefit all those youngsters who are strong and weak!
