Have you often been told that your handwriting is bad? Then you must do something about it.
Writing is easy. Most children write on the walls and they scribble on paper at the age of three. Unfortunately, many people still write the way they did when they were three years old.
You too can write attractively, just as you too can dress well. Your writing need not look like print in order to be readable. But it must be uniform, and the different letters of the alphabet must be clear. When you write fast the letters stick to one another and sometimes disappear or change drastically. A 'v' may look like an 'r', an 'm' may look like an 'n', a double 'n' may look like a 'w' and an 'n' together with a double 'm' may look like something the cat chewed and left behind. Again, when you write capital letters, 'A' may look like a perfect gentleman, but 'C' may look as if a car ran into it. 'O' may look like 'D, S' may look like a snake doing aerobics and 'W' may look as if an elephant trampled on it.
These are signs that your alphabet isn't obeying you. When you pick up the pen to write, you are unable to write just what you have in mind. Let's start from the beginning and check what goes wrong.
- Are you writing with the right kind of pen? A good ball pen is ideal for writing. Very few people use the ink pen today, though schools insist on it.
- Are you holding the pen properly? The best position to hold the pen is at an angle of 45 degrees to the paper. Hold it lightly, don't strangle it with your grip.
- Do you practice enough writing? If you practice writing, you can write well. Write in your copy book at least for half an hour every day.
- Do you give enough space? To write readably, you must give space between words and between lines. The space should not be too much or too little. After you have written, look at it. Between two words, there must be at least the space of an 'n'.
- How about line space? The space between two lines depends on how big your handwriting is. Practice writing on ruled paper for some time.
- Do you write in capital letters or in small letters? Many children continue to write in capital letters thinking it is more readable. This is not true. Capital letters are less readable than small letters.
Is your handwriting a straight or a slant? Straight handwriting is not very easy to read. Slant handwriting is pleasing to the eye. Try to slant the letters to the right rather than to the left.
- Are you fond of ornamental writing? It is written by hand. It is not ordinary handwriting - just ornamental. Look at the ends of the letters. They are curved stylishly. These curved endings are called serifs. Serifs are pleasing to the eye. But only artists can write like this. This kind of writing is called 'calligraphy'. However, you can add serifs to your writing if you like. You can curve your 'n', 'm', 'd', 'a', 'y' and 'r' just a little to make them attractive.
