I am a regular visitor of Chennai online. It is a very useful site for NRIs like me. Regarding the article about
Gifted children and challenges, I have a few comments to add. My son is 6-years-old and will be going to 2nd grade in August here in U.S. He is considered as a top reader in his class. I would say that this may be because of the exposure to the library right from when he was 2 years of age. More than that, they have a reading club in the library, that sets goals for a period of time. The more books he reads he wins coupons for a toy store or book store which gives the kid a lot of encouragement.
Secondly, the schools here have a curriculum just like in India for the academics... other than that there is a reading club in the school. The kid reads a book and writes a journal about 10 lines a day about it. The important aspect of it is free hand writing, so that the child is not stalled for a spelling he does not know or that his grammar is not correct. In fact such journals are not graded for these. They just have comments about the idea, that's all. This journal writing is started from first grade. I like this system a lot because what is needed for a 6-year-old is just to let go the ideas... either draw figures to express them or just do free hand writing. It is amazing that 6-year-olds have so many ideas in their mind...I think this should be implemented in our schools in Chennai also.
