Writing made simpler

Education

Writing may seem a simple task, but except for those who have the innate gift, it can be quite difficult. Actually the simpler a piece of writing looks, with easily understandable words and short sentences, the better its quality. Creative writing is usually a representation of free flowing thought, but the bulk of writing that has to be done, whether it is a short letter or a long presentation needs some thinking and planning.

Here are some tips for better writing:

  • Know the purpose. Think.
  • Use familiar words. Use the right word.
  • Keep sentences short. Keep paragraphs short.
  • Prefer simple language to complex language.
  • Avoid repetition, except to strengthen an idea.
  • Use active verbs. Write more like you talk.
  • Use terms your readers can picture.
  • Link to the readers' experience.
  • Convey help. Write to express and not to impress.
  • Don't have 'I' or 'We' trouble. Use the big 'You'
  • Put yourself in the reader's place. Consider his/her feelings.
  • Have a good beginning, middle and end.
  • Picture the people you are writing to.
  • Use positive terms. Forestall misunderstandings.
  • Be specific. Illustration is a good tool.
  • Be clear, complete, concise and correct.
