UGC to encourage parallel education

Education

The University Grants Commission (UGC) will encourage parallel education concept that will enable a student to obtain dual degrees, according to a report received by the Madurai Kamaraj University.

The report said the UGC would allow giving degrees simultaneously by universities and colleges where students took their degrees.

As part of its 10th plan, the UGC had decided to improve the quality of education and make it accessible to larger sections of the people. Special funding would be made available to institutes in backward areas, new colleges and universities.

It would facilitate free flow of information between colleges and universities while promoting creative and effective use of multi-media to supplement classroom and laboratory teaching.

It would set up institutions in collaboration with research laboratories and, thereby, support integrated five year teaching in science discipline with imbibed research component.

It would pursue skill improvement activity of teachers and reward innovation in teaching and research.

The report said the main objective was to intensify fundamental education with good grounding and fortifying it with 'add-on-utility' specialisation.

It would also support individual research and support research ambience and help in identification of support institutions for focused research in traditional and emerging interdisciplinary subjects, support out reach activities and focus on programmes for women, ST/ST and differently-abled groups, the report said.

It would provide incentives for academic, administrative and financial reforms and encourage resources mobilisation.

Meanwhile, university officials said the UGC's visiting committee would visit various universities between the last week of July and mid-September 2002 and review the functioning of different departments of the university.

In another development, the 'Tansche' sub-committee on distance education had specified that the syllabus of both regular and correspondence courses should be the same.

The board of studies responsible for regular syllabus should be responsible for the distance education also.
