Oxford University Press is launching a major new edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.
With work on the first edition beginning in 1902 and the first edition being published in 1933, the SOED can claim to be 100 years old.
This is the biggest dictionary of current English and its history from 1000 AD to 2002 is derived from the magisterial 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary (the publishing event of the 20th Century).

The new SOED also features about 500 words of Indian origin including, achar, acharaya, badmash, bhut, cumbly, dastur, dustak, khabar, khana, mora, nautch, palampore, pugggaree, sala, seth, soucar, tamasha, thikadar, ustad, veena and zindabad
The new SOED is in two volumes, has 3,792 pages, 3,500 new words, 500 new quotations and has a special Indian price of Rs 4,500/- (original price in UK pounds 95).
