2.5 lakh Indians to be made IT literate

The Computer Society of India, the largest association of IT professionals in India as part of its ‘IT for masses program’ in association with SSI Education and Aptech Computer Education, power brands in IT training, heralds a new era in computer literacy with the flagging of the ‘India Akshar Mission’. This mass literacy mission aims to empower over 2.5 lakh Indian citizens with IT literacy from all walks of life across the country over 2003-04. As part of the drive SSI Education and Aptech Computer Education will offer IT literacy programmes priced minimally at Rs. 499/- only throughout the country.

As a special gesture, Aptech Computer Education and SSI Education will offer 10,000 courses absolutely free of cost to the underprivileged across the country. This national drive will be carried out through various NGOs, Government and Municipal schools throughout the nation. Both Aptech Computer Education and SSI Education have created courses catering to different segments of the population including women, children and others. For this drive, Aptech will offer its ‘Vidya’ and SSI Education ‘Connect for Beginners’. 

The announcement was made at a function held recently in Chennai, which was attended by D. Jayakumar, Minister for IT, Law and Electricity, Government of Tamil Nadu, P. Unnikrishan, Honorary Directorate of Education, Computer Society of India, Sivakumar Ganesan, Head- Institutional Sales, Aptech Limited and K.Venkatesh – Head – Retail Sales SSI Education among other dignitaries.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Guest, Minister D. Jayakumar said, “We should aim at creating a world where each citizen is IT literate with the ability to communicate despite geographical and linguistic barriers. It is vital that mass awareness campaigns are held to educate people on the multifarious usage of IT in daily life, which will empower them to use technology as an enabler in their daily productive activities. To this end, the India Akshar Mission will play a pivotal role in removing the mark of IT illiteracy from people’s lives. This educational effort of Aptech Limited is highly appreciated and is in the IT vision of the State.”

The Guest of Honour, P. Unnikrishnan, Honorary Director – Education Directorate - Computer Society of India (CSI), said, “It is indeed inspiring that two pioneering organisations, CSI, which represents the largest association of IT professionals in India and Aptech Limited, India’s largest IT training company have come together to launch a massive initiative for IT literacy. It is an effort to take Information Technology to populace across boundaries and age groups. Such efforts would prepare them to meet the new challenges of the era of e-governance and global competition. The association is an excellent example of the coming together of a professional organisation with an industry partner.”

On the occasion of the launch, the Chief Guest gave away 100% scholarship awards and free course material to the deserving underprivileged candidates recommended by NGOs like Social Welfare Society. The staff of ‘The Banyan’, the social welfare organisation for destitute women was also awarded 100% scholarship certificates.

On the launch of this significant campaign and its positive impact on society, Sivakumar Ganesan said, “The ‘India Akshar Mission’ will contribute towards the fulfillment of the National IT vision of complete computer literacy by reaching out to various segments of the country at an affordable price. As a special gesture, Aptech Computer Education and SSI Education will provide free courses to 10,000 students to underprivileged persons free of cost throughout the country."

About India Akshar Mission

The India Akshar Mission aims to empower all strata of society from the grassroots level upwards and contribute in a large way to the National IT Task Force’s mission of a complete IT literate India. The attempt is to create an environment wherein the benefits of computers reach one and all. This movement will provide an exceptional thrust to the Prime Minister’s National Literacy Movement, whose momentum will enable India to catapult itself as the Information Technology superpower.

The movement is targeted towards working executives, government employees, self-employed professional, traders, housewives, farmers and students to create a massive base of competent computer users in all walks of life at the village, taluk, district and city level. The movement will also target children throughout the country and in the final phase, will impart computer literacy in the local language.
