Anna University's MoU with ISRO

Anna University's Syndicate recently approved at its meeting the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, and Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India), New Delhi.

Elaborating on the MoU, Anna University Vice-Chancellor E Balagurusamy said, "Anna University proposes to start distance education programme through tele-education for government engineering colleges and its affiliate colleges in Tamil Nadu. The Audio Visual Research Centre (AVRC) of Anna University will extend its facilities for this."

Anna University has approached ISRO for establishing a satellite-based communications network using the Ext C Band capacity of the INSAT-3B satellite system for promoting the usage of satellite-based communications in the areas of training, developing content for satellite-based audio and video educational programmes.

ISRO would provide space segment and lend ground hardware like 3.8 M antenna, HPA, up/down converter, QPsk modem, LNA, with space segment, on trial basis, in the education field for academic on line linkage. ISRO would provide technical guidance in the initial set-up of uplink, limited to a period of one month.

The Department of Media Sciences, College of Engineering, Anna University, is conducting electronic media courses:  B.Sc. Electronic Media, M.Sc. Electronic Media, M.Sc. Electronic Media Informatics and M.Sc. Electronic Media (5 years - integrated) and the classes are being taken by many experts from the fields of press, film industries and TV channels, as guest faculties. Presently, they are utilising on payment basis the facilities of NFDC (National Film Development Corporation), Chennai, and many other private studios for practical training.

Anna University proposes to enter into an MoU with Prasar Bharati, New Delhi, for utilising the latest equipment in the field of electronic media. This will help in exposing students to the latest broadcasting infrastructure, including audio and TV studios and transmission equipment, facilities available with Prasar Bharati.

In addition, the Department of Media Sciences and AVRC, Anna University, will offer refresher courses to Prasar Bharati officers.
