Rotary Club celebrates silver jubilee
The Rotary Club of Madras Central celebrated its 25th year of service and fellowship and its Charter Nite by launching a commemorative book titled '25 Years: Live from the Rotary Club of Madras Central' - a chronicle of events and milestones achieved in the last 25 years. The book has been authored by Shashi
Ravichandran.
The president of the Rotary Club for 2005 - 2006, Dilip Bhandari, said, "This book, which Shashi Ravichandran has written, will give you a glimpse of the history of our club, its members, and its activities under the various avenues of service since 1982."
Madras Central, inaugurated in November 2001, has been in the forefront of community activities since its inception. The club has made a tremendous impact in the community through two of its long-term projects - the Margaret Sidney Hospital in Nanganallur and the TTK Madras Central VHS Blood Bank.
It is currently involved in the tsunami rehabilitation project in Nagapattinam - where a total of 32,000 square feet of built up space on 1.8 acres of land allotted by the Tamil Nadu government at an estimated cost of $ 7,00,000 that includes an orphanage, a school building, and a senior citizens home. The project is a leading example of government, NGO and corporate alliance in the area of social service and leads the way in how committed partnerships can create a meaningful, long-term difference in the community, Dilip Bhandari said. The club has also forayed into long-term rehabilitation of lepers and their children who live in conditions susceptible to the disease.
Madras Central has been active in all areas of service as stipulated by Rotary International - community service, club, vocational, youth, and international service, Dilip added.
District Governor, Dr Shyamsundar, chief guest for the function, said, "I am extremely happy to note that Rotary Club of Madras Central is celebrating its Charter Nite and also bringing out a commemmorative book on the eve of the club's silver jubilee. The Rotary Club of Madras Central has been in the forefront in adding value tb the community, true to the motto, 'Service Above Self'."
