The British Council invites you to Tishani Doshi's world - Tishani will read from her first collection - Countries of the Body - with celebrated actor Rahul Bose on Saturday, September 23, 2006, 7 p.m. at The Chamiers Hall, ITC Park Sheraton, Chennai - 600018.
Writers' Block celebrates both individual talent and British Council's role in facilitating internationalism through professional devlopment of developmental opportunities.
The British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries. It creates opportunities for students and young professionals in India to engage with the UK, to experience and collaborate with UK arts and science, learn about UK study opportunities and achieve UK qualifications.
Tishani Doshi is based in Chennai, where she works as a freelance writer and with choreographer Chandralekha. She graduated with a Masters degree in creative writing from the Johns Hopkins University, and received an Eric Gregory Award for her poetry in 2001.
Countries of the Body, her first book of poems, was inaugurated this year at the Hay-on-Wye festival on a platform with Seam Heaney, Margaret Atwood, and others. The book has since been short-listed for a Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection in the UK. The opening poem, 'The Day we went to the Sea', won the 2005 British Council supported All India Poetry Competition; she was also a finalist in the Outlook-Picador Non-Fiction Competition.
She is currently working on the biography of the Sri Lankan spin king Muthaiah Muralitharan, and has a novel from Bloomsbury forthcoming.
The Forward Poetry prizes were created in 1991 to bring contemporary poetry to a wider audience. Known as the 'Bardic Booker', this is the UK's most valuable annual poetry competition as well as the only major awards that honour both established and up-and-coming poets.
Rahul Bose - actor, writer, director, rugby player, brand ambassador. This former advertising accounts manager who changed careers at the age of 26 is undoubtedly India's premier actor of alternative cinema. Since the unprecedented success of his first film 'English August', Rahul has grown as a film personality but continues to make time for his first love - sport. He is a member of the Indian Rugby team and sets aside three months a year to participate in international competitions. Social concerns occupy an equal importance in Rahul's life, primarily his post-tsunami efforts in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.
He has lectured, written extensively, and regularly works with several organisations focusing on communal harmony and gender equality. His latest film 'Pyar Ke Side Effects' with Mallika Sherawat has opened with much enthusiasm. Rahul has also just finished 'The Whisperers' and an American film titled 'Kerala'. He will move on to direct his next film 'Moth Smoke' in 2007.
