A free book on the laws of the land
The TRIPLE-S Ilaignar Samudhaya Munnetra Sangam was founded in 2002 with the primary objective of making the youth a big force in society and is into conducting a lot of activities. One such activity is to disseminate information about the laws of the land.
Every year, this organisation simplifies some of the laws of the nation and publishes them as a 'Compilation of Indian Laws' to create awareness about laws among the people.
The 'law committee' of the sangam says that laws are like a dark lane. Only those who know that the lane exists there can travel along the road. This compendium tries to show us the way, it says.
In 2004, the compilation dealt with general laws and in 2005 it took up the issue of licences and passports.
The 2006 book was released at a simple function in Madurai. There was no dais, no audience. The function took place at the office of the collector who released the book in front of the public who had come to petition him.
Kabilan Vairamuthu, founder-member of the organisation, handed over the first copy of Compilation of Indian Laws 2006 to collector Udayachandran. The organisation's central committee member Vijai, law committee member Mohan and Madurai district coordinator Aravind were present at the simple function.
The books were distributed free to the public present there.
"Those who speak of social transformation must first understand society. This free book on laws is an effort in that direction," says Kabilan. He adds, "Everybody agrees that we need to see change and growth in education, politics and laws for India to grow. Those who wish to bring about the change must understand the present-day set-up well."
About 300 copies of the book were distributed to all and sundry that day in Madurai. They did not differentiate between the cream of society and those living in abject poverty.
Law committee head Devanathan and committee member Mohan were involved in collecting material for the book and took care of the translation also. The book gives information about laws in simple Tamil and English in about 57 pages.
This year the book deal with consumer rights and citizen rights, particularly the Right to Information Act.
Asked about the reason for launching the book in Madurai, Kabilan said they had decided on the launch last year itself. There was no relation between the launch and the elections, he clarified.
Coordinator Aravind helped in starting a small branch of the sangam in Madurai on the occasion.
Don't fault the laws. Say that we don't know about the laws. Let us get to know the laws. This book will be instrumental in helping people understand laws and using them at the appropriate time, says the law committee of the
sangam.
The Ilaignar Samudaya Munnetra Sangam is also involved in other activities. Last month, they visited government schools to find out their shortcomings. The research paper was then presented to the Minister for School Education.
On August 15, the members of the association met Sri Lankan refugees staying in Rameswaram and distributed food and medical supplies worth Rs 30,000 to them. The refugees were happy that some leaders were fighting for their sake in Tamil Nadu, but they begged that it not be politicised. That would not put an end to the war in Lanka, they averred.
The youth association has plans to do greater things in future. One of the things it is doing now is preparing a plan to improve the movement of traffic in south Chennai. Also, there are plans to conduct medical camps in the wake of the chikungunya epidemic in Tamil
Nadu.
