There will be a launch of the book, 'Mouna
Duthan' (Silent Messenger), German poems from J W Goethe to
Erich Kästner, translated into Tamil by Vatsala Vijayakumar.
The launch function is at 5 p.m.on July 15,
2007 at the Goethe-Institut,
Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai.
According to a note from Geetha Vedaraman,
programme coordinator, 'Mouna Duthan' is a collection of poems
translated directly from German into Tamil.
The book also includes biographical sketches
of all the poets presented, such as Friedrich Schiller, Novalis,
et al...
More importantly, the author has given a
detailed introduction to German literature from the earliest
times to the present day. This part of the book may be as
interesting to the Tamil reading public as the translated poems
themselves as there is very little awareness about German
literature in Tamil Nadu at the moment.
Most of the Tamil translations of German
literary works are all translated from their English versions.
But translator Vatsala Vijayakumar has found an impressive
closeness to the German originals.
