Tamil Nadu Open University Vice-Chancellor, Dr M S Palanichamy, inaugurated the annual day celebrations of the Pachaiyappa's College National Service Scheme (NSS) at the college March 2.
Inaugrating the function, he said, "Pachaiyappa's College has a 150 years of tradition of providing quality higher education to the needy and the downtrodden."
Dr Palanichamy pointed out that just like blood plays a vital role in a human being's life, so also Pachaiyappa's College plays a vital role in providing higher education to people. If Pachaiyappa's College had not been there, then higher education would have not been possible for the downtrodden people.
The Vice-Chancellor also stated that the college has done a lot for social transformation.
Quoting the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi's words, "India will become a developed country when our villages transform from cowdung godown to the garden of Athens", he said Jawaharlal Nehru formed the National Service Scheme (NSS) with this objective in mind, and also urged students to make India a developed country.
M
Parasuraman, principal, Pachaiyappa's College, said in his address, "Cultural and social activities promote National Service Scheme. NSS programmes teach good moral values and make a student a good citizen."
He further stated that NSS activities have gained momentum in the college with students getting interest in serving people.
Programee officer T Sekar expalined the various activities of the
NSS.
Cultural programmes by students also took place. The highlight of the programme was a skit by students explaining the hazards of using cellphones while driving/riding.
Pachaiyappa's College's NSS has been conducting regular blood donation camps, night school and dental camps. The college has also adopted Sengadu village and has been working for developing the infrastructure of the village.
